You've heard of the name before and have probably seen bottles of the stuff everywhere but do you know what it is

and why it's important? Well, you're in luck because you're about to learn some cool info that you can impress your friends with at your next backyard grillout (if people are actually impressed, please let us know).

Carnauba Wax- Plant Based Awesomeness!

Grown in the northeastern part of Brazil, the Carnuaba palm is often referred to the as "queen of waxes" because the wax doesn't break down very easily and it makes everything it touches look glossy. The leaves of this palm produce a hard wax that is removed by shaking the leaves once they're dry and the particles are collected, refined, bleached, and then used for all sorts of stuff like surfboard wax, boat hull coatings, candy coatings (yum!), and even dental floss. So why is it so great to use on your car's paint?

Plants Produce Their Own Sunscreen, Your Car Doesn't

The wax on the Carnauba palm help protect the palm leaf's surface from UV rays and also helps repel water down towards the plant's roots. But since leaves release oxygen, the wax also is "breathable". All of these traits are what makes Carnauba wax perfect for your car's paint. Let's think about it a little deeper. Automotive paint has a clear coat that protects the base coat underneath. But what protects the clear coat? That's where waxing comes in.

When you apply a thin layer of wax on paint either by hand or machine, it fills in the microscopic valleys and ridges on the surface which repels water and prevents dirt and debris from embedding themselves and making a happy home. Another plus is that since your car's paint doesn't come with it's own sunscreen, waxing helps prevent your clear coat from fading caused by harmful UV rays. Isnt that awesome?!

So now that you're a waxing and car care expert, you can impress your friends by telling them that the wax is good for about 6-8 weeks depending on the weather conditions and that you learned all of it from your friends at Independence Auto Detailing.

Cheers!
